Mbita Law Court will today announce its judgment regarding the burial rites of Kennedy Onyango

Mbita Law Court will today announce its judgment regarding the burial rites of Kennedy Onyango, a 12-year-old boy who was tragically killed by police during anti-tax protests in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County. The court’s decision will determine if Kennedy will be buried at the home of his mother, Jacinta Anyango, or his father, Denis Okinyi.

On July 6, a procession aiming to lay Kennedy to rest at his mother’s home in Rusinga was interrupted by Okinyi, who arrived armed with a court order.

Okinyi, the boy’s father and former partner of Jacinta, sought legal intervention to prevent the mother from burying Kennedy at her current marital home. Okinyi argued that Jacinta had only lived with Kennedy for one year, as the boy had been under his custody previously.

Jacinta accused Okinyi of obstructing the burial due to the financial support provided by the government for the burial expenses. She claimed that his motive was to control the contributions meant for the burial.

Kennedy’s body, initially en route to Rusinga for burial, was redirected to Suba Sub-County Hospital, where it has remained pending the court’s decision.

The boy lost his life in June 2024 after being shot during the anti-tax protests in Rongai.
