Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei was compelled to engage with a large crowd of protesters who thronged the city on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Accompanied by other police officers, Bungei interacted with demonstrators along Moi Avenue in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), where picketing activities had gathered momentum.
During the patrol, Bungei accepted greetings from several members of the public and protesters, who were armed with their phones, water bottles, and Kenyan flags.
As he tried to address the crowd, the protesters began chanting “We are peaceful,” aiming to convey to Bungei that they were not violent as some political leaders had portrayed them.
However, as the chants grew louder and more fervent, Bungei was forced to retreat from the area.
The protests in Nairobi CBD were largely peaceful from 11 am to 2 pm.
Cases of teargas and running battles were barely witnessed around the city centre.
