Cat owners in Nairobi County will soon need to pay Ksh.200 to obtain a license for legal ownership, as per a new county law proposal.

The Animal Control Welfare Draft Bill mandates that no one can keep a cat without a license from the County Government.

“A cat license fee shall be shillings two hundred (Ksh.200) and shall subject to revision in the current Finance Act and shall become due upon the issue or renewal of a license,” reads part of the Bill.

The application process requires proof of suitable premises to control the cat. Licenses expire on December 31 and can be renewed for Ksh.100.

The bill also states that licenses can be renewed for free if the cat is neutered within twelve months of the original issuance.

The bill includes a yearly rabies vaccination requirement for cats over three months old.

“Every cat in the City aged over three months shall be vaccinated against rabies by a veterinary surgeon at least once a year and a vaccination certificate issued by the veterinary surgeon which shall be retained by the owner at all times,” adds another part of the Bill.

Additionally, it prohibits allowing cats to disturb the peace and mandates that female cats in heat be confined to prevent contact with other cats.

A transfer fee of Ksh.100 is required for any change in cat ownership.
