The Paris 2024 Olympic Games kicked off with a historic and visually stunning opening ceremony, held for the first time outside a stadium along the Seine River.

The event, celebrated for its innovative approach and elegant execution, set a new standard for global sporting spectacles.

However, the ceremony was marred by a notable incident that has sparked controversy among Kenyan fans.

During the live broadcast, an English TV commentator mispronounced the name of Kenya’s flag bearer, Ferdinand Omanyala.

The commentator incorrectly referred to Omanyala as “Ferdinald Omanpalyaya,” a mistake that quickly caught the attention of viewers.

The error was highlighted in a social media video shared by Larry Modowo, which drew widespread criticism from Kenyan audiences.

While mispronunciations are not uncommon in live broadcasts, the specific error involving Omanyala has led to a wave of dissatisfaction on social media.

Many Kenyan fans have expressed their displeasure and are calling for an official apology, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation for their national athletes.

Some of the comments on social media include:

  • @fwelloh, expressing frustration, wrote: “We, the people of Kenya, demand a formal apology!”
  • @EugeneOngeri humorously inquired: “Who is Omanpayaya? 🤔🤔🤨”
  • @Gibbo_2010, labelling the mispronunciation as egregious, commented: “Ferdinand Ompamayaya 😂 Criminal!”
