The identities of Kenyatta University students who died on March 18 while traveling to Mombasa for an academic trip have been made public. The 11 were part of a group of 58 people headed to Mombasa.

Their bus was engaged in an accident with a tractor-trailer in Maungu, Taita Taveta. Some survivors were evacuated to Nairobi and then transferred to Avenue Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the 11 were transferred to Kenyatta University Hospital Morgue and are being conserved awaiting funeral rites.

Their names are: Beneas Otieno, Navile Omondi Opiyo, Michael Muteti, Vallary Akinyi Ouma, Hellen Mbula Kisilu and Oslo Mwendwa.

Others are : John Mbiriri Mureithi, Felix Gori Nyaata, Patricia Murugi Mwangi, Rodger Kiprotich Rono and Austine Omondi Owino.

All of the students involved were from the School of Public Health.

On Thursday, relatives of the deceased attended a post-mortem examination exercise at the KU funeral home, where they asked the Government to assist them with funeral and burial expenses.

The post-mortem examination results revealed that all of the victims perished from serious head injuries experienced during the fatal accident.

Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina confirmed the unfortunate news in a press statement issued on the 19th of March, a day after the tragedy, and requested more time before providing any further information information.

“Unfortunately, sources indicate that there are student fatalities. Last night, the University sent a team from both the Main Campus and the Mombasa Campus to the accident location to investigate the situation, assist survivors, and deliver an accurate report,” he stated.

Avenue Hospital has reported that the majority of the pupils who survived the accident and were sent to the hospital for treatment are currently in stable condition.

According to Dr. Said Mohammed, manager of Avenue Hospital, they received 18 survivors of the accident, all of whom were stabilized by medical personnel.

May their Souls rest in eternal peace.
