Widespread Concern as Red Eye Disease Spreads Across Counties and Sub-Counties

The red eye disease, which first emerged in Teso North Sub-County within Busia County, has now spread to several other regions, causing widespread alarm.

According to a report from Busia County’s Eye Diseases Coordinator, Harriet Kavere, cases of the disease have been confirmed in Teso South, Nambale, Matayos, and Samia sub-counties.

The situation has become increasingly alarming as the number of infections has tripled since last month.

The disease, caused by the adenovirus, leads to symptoms such as red, swollen eyes, and a discharge of fluids.

Those infected often feel as though there are tiny stones in their eyes, which also become itchy and uncomfortable.

Red eye disease is highly contagious and spreads easily through direct contact. Kavere explained that simply shaking hands with an infected person, sharing a bed, touching their clothes, or using the same makeup can lead to transmission.

Kavere strongly advises anyone who notices symptoms to seek medical attention immediately from qualified eye specialists.

She emphasized the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment, cautioning against the use of unnecessary injections.

Additionally, Kavere urged local leaders, including chiefs and their assistants, to take an active role in educating the public about the disease and preventive measures.

Raising awareness is crucial to preventing the further spread of this highly contagious illness.
