Journalist Catherine Wanjeri Says Her Life is in Danger After Being Shot During Anti-Finance Bill Protests

Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a Kenyan journalist attached to Mediamax, has revealed that her life is in danger following a shooting incident during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations organized by Gen Z protestors across the nation.

Wanjeri, who was shot while covering the protests in Nakuru’s Central Business District, disclosed on Monday that she has been receiving threatening phone calls, which she believes are meant to intimidate her into withdrawing her case.

The journalist recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that the unidentified male caller seemed to know personal details about her and her family, leaving her terrified and unsure of her safety.

“It is true that there might be someone targeting me. How can I get the courage to come out of my house as a woman when someone you don’t know calls you and even worse, they know your family?”

Wanjeri admitted that the fear had grown so intense that she had considered abandoning the case to avoid further threats.

“I have contemplated even bolting out of this case because maybe that will make them stop following me,” she revealed.

However, she credited the support of her colleagues in Nakuru and the Journalists’ Association for giving her the courage to continue seeking justice.

“I want to commend the officials of our association and the chairperson because they have been pushing for this case even when I was in hospital, doing follow up even with the IPOA,” she added.

Wanjeri’s shooting, which also left a fellow journalist critically injured, sparked widespread outrage among civil rights groups and the media fraternity.

The incident, captured on video, showed Wanjeri in excruciating pain as she crawled on the ground, clutching her blood-stained leg.
