This weekend, the Nairobi Expressway will shut down temporarily to host the 3rd Nairobi City Marathon. Moja Expressway Company, which manages the road, announced the closure starting Saturday at 9:30 PM. They have not yet confirmed when the road will reopen.

Organizers have themed this year’s marathon around “pushing ourselves to the limit and achieving our personal best.” They promise “new and enjoyable surprises,” building excitement for what’s sure to be an action-packed event.

Some confusion has arisen due to conflicting information. While Moja Expressway Company plans to announce the reopening time later, the marathon’s official page suggests normal operations will resume Sunday at 4 PM. Officials advise motorists to plan their journeys carefully to avoid potential delays.

The Nairobi City Marathon has quickly established itself as a premier event in the region’s running calendar. Last year’s edition, held on July 2, 2023, saw impressive performances that set new records. Robert Kipkemboi won the men’s race with a time of 2:07:38, while Naomi Jebet dominated the women’s category, finishing in 2:24:33. These achievements have raised expectations for this year’s event.

Using the Nairobi Expressway as part of the marathon route offers runners a unique experience. They’ll traverse the city’s modern infrastructure while pushing their physical limits. Spectators will have the opportunity to watch world-class athletes compete against the backdrop of Nairobi’s evolving skyline.

The temporary closure of this vital transportation artery highlights the need for effective communication and coordination. Event organizers, city officials, and the public must work together to minimize disruptions. Moja Expressway Company urges drivers to plan alternative routes during the closure.

As Nairobi positions itself as a hub for major athletic competitions, events like the City Marathon promote health and fitness while showcasing the city’s capacity to host large-scale events.

The Nairobi City Marathon reflects the city’s growth and dynamism. It combines urban development with international sports, putting Nairobi on the global marathon map.

As runners take to the expressway, they’ll not only compete for personal bests but also celebrate Nairobi’s evolution as a vibrant African metropolis.
