Recently, President William Ruto launched an ambitious project to clean and restore the heavily polluted Nairobi River through the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
The project aims to reclaim the river by addressing years of neglect and pollution caused by human and industrial waste.
President Ruto emphasized that the initiative will restore Nairobi’s dignity and ensure that residents can once again enjoy clean waterways.
He highlighted the government’s commitment to transforming the river, with support from the Nairobi County government under Governor Sakaja.
The project will involve clearing sewage and other waste contaminating the river, with plans to relocate those residing in informal settlements along its banks.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured residents that affected individuals will be provided alternative livelihoods.
This cleanup effort is part of a broader vision to make Nairobi a world-class capital by improving infrastructure, environmental conditions, and quality of life.
Despite previous failed attempts to clean up the Nairobi River, such as the 1999 Nairobi Basin Programme and efforts by former Environment Minister John Michuki, Ruto’s administration believes that their political will and clear strategy will yield lasting results.
The Nairobi Rivers Commission will oversee the entire process, working closely with various stakeholders to address the pollution crisis effectively.
