Julius Gaya, the Speaker of Homa Bay County Assembly, resigned unexpectedly just hours before a scheduled impeachment debate.

His resignation was announced by Deputy Speaker Okings Okomo, who confirmed that Gaya had submitted a formal resignation letter to the Assembly Clerk, in line with procedural requirements.

Reports indicate that 53 out of 54 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) had signed a petition seeking his removal, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with his leadership.

Majority Leader Richard Ogindo described Gaya’s resignation as an appropriate move, noting that he had lost significant support among the MCAs.

Gaya’s decision follows recent scrutiny and allegations that may have fueled tensions within the Assembly.

He had been summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) alongside former acting Clerk Anne Ager, who resigned after her own appearance before the anti-graft agency.

Although specific reasons for the impeachment effort were not disclosed, this investigation appears to have contributed to a loss of confidence among Assembly members.

The resignation letter expressed Gaya’s gratitude for the opportunity to serve, marking the end of his term that began after the 2022 general elections.

Following his resignation, the Speaker position in the Homa Bay County Assembly is now vacant.

Deputy Speaker Okomo informed the Assembly members and declared the seat open for a new appointment.

This leadership change adds a new dynamic to the county’s political landscape as officials seek stability amid ongoing investigations and reforms within the Assembly structure.
