The Chilling Tale of Hashim Dagane: The Somali Serial Killer Who Shocked Kenya

On October 21, 2024, 19-year-old Dake Abdinoor left her parents’ home in Eastleigh to visit her boyfriend, Hashim Dagane.

A second-year student at the Great Lakes University in Kisumu, Dake was deeply infatuated with Hashim, despite her parents’ strong objections.

Hashim, who had posed as a successful businessman in the taxi industry, had charmed his way into Dake’s heart, even as her family suspected something sinister about him.

Unbeknownst to Dake, her parents’ instincts were painfully accurate. The man she trusted had a dark and horrifying past.

Hashim was an Ethiopian fugitive who had fled his home country after being convicted of murdering his wife and three children, dissolving their bodies in acid in a gruesome crime that echoed scenes from the TV series Breaking Bad.

As a former Ethiopian police officer, Hashim used his knowledge of the system to manipulate officials, bribe his way out of custody, and acquire fake Kenyan citizenship.

He settled in Eastleigh, a bustling Nairobi neighborhood with a significant Somali population, blending seamlessly into the community.

A Predator Among Us

Hashim started his new life as an Uber driver, plying routes between Eastleigh and Parklands. It was during his work that he met Dake, a beautiful young Somali woman who fell for his smooth words and apparent charm.

Their secret relationship grew stronger, despite her family’s warnings.

But Hashim harbored dark intentions. On October 22, 2024, his murderous impulses resurfaced.

While ordinary Kenyans went about their daily routines, Hashim’s twisted mind plotted his next move: kidnapping for ransom.

His first victim that day was Waaris Daud, a 46-year-old woman who had sought medical attention at a hospital near the busy BBS Mall in Eastleigh.

As she stepped outside and hailed a cab, Hashim appeared. He drove her to an undisclosed location, where he held her captive.

Later that night, Waaris’ daughter Amina and cousin Nuseiba grew worried when she didn’t return home.

They ventured out to search for her, unaware they were walking straight into Hashim’s trap. Hashim, who had been waiting nearby, picked them up under the guise of helping them find their missing relative.

Once in his vehicle, Hashim’s true nature emerged. He suffocated Amina, stabbed Nuseiba in the heart, and brutally slit Waaris’ throat.

To cover his tracks, he dismembered Waaris’ body, scattering her remains in different locations: Amina’s body was dumped in Parklands, Nuseiba’s in Buruburu, and Waaris’ severed hands in South C.

The rest of Waaris’ body was discarded near Alim Secondary School in Machakos.

The Ultimate Betrayal

Back in Eastleigh, Hashim continued to charm Dake, even as the news of his grisly crimes made headlines.

Her family, unaware of her fate, reported her missing at the California Police Station after days without contact.

They briefly felt relief when she sent them a WhatsApp voice note claiming she was safe, unaware that Hashim was setting the stage for his most heinous act yet.

Hashim hired a taxi driver, Jared Mongare, to book an Airbnb apartment at Valley Heights in Lavington.

This would be the site of Dake’s tragic end. On October 29, after days of celebration, Hashim decided it was time to eliminate her to protect his identity.

Surveillance footage showed the couple shopping at Quickmart Lavington before returning to the apartment.

This was the last time Dake was seen alive. Over the next two days, Hashim dissolved her body in acid and packed her remains in plastic bags, which he later dumped in Lang’ata.

The Fall of a Monster

Hashim abandoned his car, a Nissan Note KBQ 718Y, at ENA Express Yard near Wakulima Market and returned to Eastleigh to lay low.

However, his actions had drawn the attention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

After weeks of evading capture, Hashim was arrested at his hideout in Kamukunji. He is now in custody, awaiting trial for the brutal murders of four women, including his young lover Dake.

This horrifying story has left the nation in shock, a grim reminder of the evil that can hide behind a charming facade.

As the case unfolds in court, Kenyans hope for justice for the victims and their families.
