Kenyans interested in sharing their opinions regarding former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union (AU) Chairmanship are invited to join the debate and actively participate in the discussion.

Reports indicate that the AU Chairmanship Debate, featuring Raila Odinga, is scheduled for today, Friday, from 7 PM to 9 PM.

During this event, Raila will outline his manifesto and present his ideas as he seeks to secure the AU’s top leadership position.

The debate, known as Mjadala Afrika, will provide a platform for candidates to articulate their visions, priorities, and strategies for advancing the AU’s policies and achieving its Agenda 2063 goals.

This agenda is a long-term framework aimed at transforming Africa into a global powerhouse through sustainable development, economic growth, and improved living standards for its people.

According to the African Union Commission (AUC), the debate will focus on policy-based discussions and solution-oriented strategies, allowing candidates to elaborate on their approaches to achieving the aspirations and objectives of Agenda 2063.

It will also highlight their plans for other AU-focused initiatives and their strategies for promoting unified African positions on global issues.

Public participation is highly encouraged, with the debate designed to reflect the concerns and aspirations of the African people.

Members of the public will be able to engage by watching the broadcast on various channels across all 55 AU member states.

Questions can be submitted in real-time through the African Union’s official handle on the X platform, @_AfricanUnion.

The live event will feature two moderators, one English-speaking and one French-speaking, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for a diverse audience.

Additionally, the debate will be broadcast in six languages, including Swahili, and will be available on the AU’s official website. In Kenya, viewers can follow the proceedings live on Citizen TV.

Raila Odinga will face two formidable contenders for the AU chairmanship: Djibouti’s current Foreign Affairs Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and Madagascar’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, Richard Randriamandrato.

To strengthen his candidacy, Raila has developed a comprehensive ten-point manifesto aimed at addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges.

His ten-point agenda emphasizes:

  1. Economic Transformation – Promoting inclusive growth and economic diversification.
  2. Infrastructure Development – Accelerating the construction of roads, railways, and energy projects.
  3. Financial Independence – Reducing reliance on foreign aid by boosting Africa’s internal resource mobilization.
  4. Gender Equity and Equality – Enhancing opportunities for women in leadership and development.
  5. Agricultural Transformation – Supporting sustainable agriculture and food security initiatives.
  6. Climate Action – Tackling climate change through green energy and environmental conservation.
  7. Harnessing Youth Potential – Empowering young people with education, skills, and job opportunities.
  8. Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence – Leveraging technology to drive innovation and service delivery.

The debate promises to be a pivotal moment in determining the AU’s next chairperson, with Raila Odinga hopeful that his vision and proposals will resonate with the decision-makers and the African public.

The AUC urges everyone to tune in and actively participate, ensuring the debate represents the diverse voices and aspirations of the continent.

Don’t miss the chance to engage in shaping Africa’s future leadership.
