Governor Fires 181 Employees in Major County Crackdown

The Migori County Public Service Board has dismissed 181 employees from various roles in the county government as part of a large-scale workforce review.

A Gazette Notice issued by the Board revealed that the majority of those affected were staff members from the Center for International Health, Education, and Biosecurity (CIHEB) department.

The Board explained that the Department of Public Health and Sanitation had requested the renewal of contracts for CIHEB staff, effective from October 1, 2024.

However, this renewal was subject to meeting several conditions, which were carefully evaluated before decisions were made.

Following the review, contracts for 319 employees were renewed, while 91 staff members were dismissed.

The decision to let go of the 91 workers was based on factors such as staff performance evaluations, proper academic qualifications, professional registrations, valid licenses, and the need to maintain diversity and gender balance within the county workforce.

The Board also noted that CIHEB experienced budget cuts for Migori County, leading to a necessary reduction in staff numbers.

This wave of dismissals occurred a few months after the department hired 58 new staff members in May to help manage the HIV pandemic.

Additionally, another 86 employees were recently fired after an investigation uncovered that they had submitted fake academic documents.

Four more employees were dismissed following separate recommendations from the County Human Resource Management Advisory Committee (CHRMAC), which flagged various concerns during their review.
