Tension Erupts at Kakamega Funeral as Politicians Clash Over Healthcare Funding
A dramatic scene unfolded at a funeral in Kakamega County when two political factions engaged in a heated debate over the allocation of funds to healthcare facilities.
The incident took place in the Shilongo area of Malava Constituency during the burial of a former member of the county assembly (MCA).
In response to the growing tension, the family had to intervene and stop politicians from turning the funeral into a political battleground.
The conflict began after the burial when a group of leaders, led by Senator Boni Khalwale, criticized Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa for what they described as the neglect of the county’s healthcare system.
Senator Khalwale argued that it was not political to demand proper funding for healthcare services, pointing out that the county government had failed to allocate sufficient resources for medicines and hospital activities.
“It’s not politics if I say the county government should allocate money for medicines because the county has refused to finance health activities in our hospitals,” Senator Khalwale stated, expressing frustration over the situation.
In response, former Senator Cleophas Malala defended Governor Barasa and shifted the focus of the discussion.
Malala urged Senator Khalwale to address the issue of fund disbursement at the national level rather than simply criticizing the county’s administration.
“Senator Khalwale, you are the one tasked with overseeing the transfer of funds from the national government. I want you to explain why county funds have been delayed.
If all these three leaders continue fighting, it is the people who will suffer,” Malala emphasized, pointing out the consequences of internal political struggles on the public.
Despite the tense exchange, the family’s request for politicians to refrain from politicking at the funeral served as a reminder of the importance of respecting such occasions and focusing on honoring the deceased.
