Parliament has approved seven nominees proposed by Ruto.

The National Assembly has approved President William Ruto’s seven nominees for the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), who were proposed two months ago.

This approval was unanimous and followed a debate after the Committee on Appointments presented a report supporting the nominations.

A majority of Members of Parliament (MPs) backed the appointments but advised the new appointees to avoid conflicts with Parliament, as seen in past administrations.

The seven appointed members include Sammy Chepkwony, who will serve as the chairperson, and Martin Kizito Ong’oyi, Mohamed Aden Abdi, Leonid Ashindu, Gilda Odera, Geoffrey Apollo Omondi, and Jane Gatakaa Njage as members.

Each of them represents a different sector within the government, such as the Defence Council, county governments, and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Others represent major bodies, including an umbrella group for employers, a union for trade unions, and a joint commission for professional organizations.

These seven nominees were part of a group of 20 individuals proposed by the President for various commissions, which also included the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Commission of Administrative Justice (CAJ), and the National Gender Equality Commission (NGEC).

While the other nominees were quickly vetted and approved, the SRC nominees experienced a significant delay.

This was due to the Committee on Appointments requesting more time to thoroughly review the appointments.

The vetting process for these nominees began on November 22, 2024, with the National Assembly’s Labour Committee, led by Sammy Chepkwony.

However, despite the other appointees taking office, the SRC nominees were left waiting as the National Assembly went into recess for the December holidays.

On December 5, during a National Assembly session, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah requested additional time to address some outstanding issues before a final decision could be made.

The Kikuyu MP asked the Speaker of the House to approve a 14-day extension to resolve the remaining concerns.

“This House resolves to extend the period for the consideration of a special motion concerning the approval of nominees submitted by His Excellency the President for the appointment of the chairperson and members of the SRC by 14 days, starting December 11,” Ichung’wah proposed.

The request was seconded by Minority Whip Mark Mwenje and was eventually approved by the House Speaker, Moses Wetangula.
