Changes in Nairobi Police Leadership: Adamson Bungei Recalled, New Appointments Made

On Thursday, January 16, the National Police Service (NPS) announced significant changes in its leadership, signaling a new direction in the operations of the force.

Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, confirmed the reshuffle, which involved several key positions within the service.

Long-serving Nairobi County Commander, Adamson Bungei, has been recalled to the NPS headquarters.

Bungei, who has headed Nairobi’s police operations for a substantial period, has now been appointed as the Director of Operations.

In his place, George Sedah, who was previously the Coast Regional Police Commander, has been transferred to Nairobi to take over as the new County Commander.

In other notable changes, Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango has been appointed as the new Commandant of the Diplomatic Police Unit.

Her former role will be filled by Michael Nyaga Muchiri, who has been promoted from his position as the Kiambu Police Commander.

Additionally, Kwale Police Commander, Ali Nuno, has been elevated to the position of Coast Regional Police Commander, with hopes of addressing the increasing challenges posed by gang activities in Mombasa.

The reshuffle also saw Michael Sang appointed as the new head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for the Eastern Region.

In a further shake-up, Mwangi Wanderi, who previously served as the head of the National Forensics Laboratory, has been reassigned to lead the Human Capital department at Vigilance House.

Rosemary Kuraru will now take over the leadership of the National Forensics Laboratory, while Judy Jebet will head the Community Policing Unit.

Inspector General Kanja described the changes as routine adjustments aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening the police force’s overall performance.

The reshuffle reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that law enforcement is effective and responsive to the evolving security concerns across the country.

Activists Threaten Legal Action Against Adamson Bungei

The recent changes come in the wake of controversial events involving Adamson Bungei during his tenure as Nairobi Police Commander.

Human rights activists had expressed strong opposition to Bungei’s handling of anti-finance bill protests, specifically the arrests made during the “Occupy Parliament” demonstrations.

Many protesters were detained during the protests, which led to widespread condemnation from human rights organizations.

Ndung’u Wainaina, the executive director of the International Centre for Policy and Conflict, condemned the police actions, calling the arrests a violation of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.

Wainaina also criticized the police for intimidating the demonstrators and pledged to provide free legal support to those arrested.

He emphasized that the current generation is fighting for economic dignity and that peaceful protests are a fundamental right.

The activists’ efforts have led to threats of legal action against Bungei, as they demand the immediate release of those detained and accountability for the police’s actions during the protests.
