Kenya Power Delivers a Message to Kenyans Over Charging Phones Overnight

Kenya Power has issued a message to Kenyans regarding the risks and costs of charging phones overnight.

Many people have noticed higher electricity bills lately, and one common habit that could be contributing to this is leaving phones plugged in throughout the night.

In today’s busy lifestyle, it’s common for people to charge their phones overnight to ensure they wake up with a full battery.

However, what seems like a harmless practice could be quietly adding to your electricity bill.

Modern smartphones often have smart charging technology that stops charging once the battery is full.

However, even when the battery is fully charged, your phone continues to draw small amounts of power, which adds up over time and increases energy costs.

On Friday, January 17, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) shared an important message on X (formerly Twitter), warning the public that charging phones overnight does increase electricity expenses.

They explained that despite the phone reaching full charge, it still consumes small amounts of electricity, which eventually contributes to higher bills.

“Myth: Charging your phone overnight doesn’t waste energy. Fact: Once your phone is fully charged, it continues to draw small amounts of power, wasting energy over time,” KPLC clarified.

To help Kenyans manage their electricity costs, KPLC has advised the public to unplug their phones once they are fully charged.

Alternatively, they recommend using smart plugs, which automatically stop the flow of power once the device is fully charged.

Beyond increased power bills, overnight charging can pose safety risks. Phones generate heat while charging, and in rare cases, this heat could lead to a fire hazard.

To stay safe, KPLC warned against placing objects such as books, devices, or even pillows over a charging phone, as it can trap heat and become dangerous.

For your phone’s health, your personal safety, and to reduce electricity costs, it’s best to avoid charging your phone overnight.

Make it a habit to unplug the device once it’s fully charged and avoid sleeping with a charging phone under your pillow.
