A tragic road accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a bus has left several people feared dead along the Ndori-Lwanda Kotieno road in Siaya County.

The crash occurred near Wii-Omino when the matatu attempted to overtake the Nya Ugenya bus, leading to a catastrophic collision.

Eyewitnesses reported that the matatu lost control during the overtaking attempt and overturned on impact.

Meanwhile, the bus veered off the road and crashed into a nearby structure, causing additional damage.

Both vehicles, which had started their journey in Ndori, were en route to Lwanda Kotieno when the unfortunate incident took place. While the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed, multiple casualties have been reported.

Victims who sustained injuries were immediately rushed to Madiany Sub-County Referral Hospital and Bondo Sub-County Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Victor Otunge, the Assistant Chief of Naya sub-location, arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and confirmed that both vehicles were traveling at high speeds before the crash.

He stated that investigations are underway to determine if additional factors, such as mechanical failure or driver negligence, played a role in the collision.

Preliminary findings suggest that the speeding matatu lost control while attempting to overtake the bus.

First responders quickly secured the scene, provided first aid to survivors, and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby morgue, where they will undergo post-mortem examinations to aid in further investigations.

This devastating crash adds to the alarming number of road accidents recorded in Kenya this month. Just over the weekend, five lives were lost in a similar incident in Migori County.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents claim approximately 3,000 lives annually in Kenya.

The NTSA’s data shows a worrying trend, with many accidents occurring during weekends and public holidays.

In 2024 alone, between January and November, a staggering 4,282 lives were lost on Kenyan roads.

The authority also highlighted that the hours between 5 PM and 8 AM are particularly dangerous, with speeding, drunk driving, and reckless behavior among the leading causes of road accidents.

Authorities have called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and greater public awareness to curb the rising number of fatalities on the roads.

This latest accident serves as a grim reminder of the need for caution and adherence to traffic regulations.
