Kenya Power Issues New Directive to Customers

Kenya Power Urges Customers to Update Their Records for VAT Returns

Kenya Power has issued a notice urging all customers who use their electricity bills to claim Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds to update their personal and business information.

This update is necessary to ensure the smooth processing of VAT returns, in line with recent changes in the filing system.

The notice, published on Tuesday, January 21, through the government’s MyGov platform, requests customers to submit important documents.

These include a copy of their Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Personal Identification Number (PIN) and a National Identity Card.

For businesses, the required documents also include partnership certificates, certificates of incorporation, or other legal registration documents that verify their status.

In addition to these documents, customers need to provide their email address, telephone number, and postal address.

All these records must be submitted to the County Commercial Services Engineer at the nearest Kenya Power office for processing.

This request comes as part of a larger initiative by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to simplify the VAT return filing process for VAT-registered taxpayers, which was officially rolled out for the November 2024 tax period.

The new process involves pre-filling VAT returns with tax information that KRA already holds, aimed at making the filing process more efficient and user-friendly.

VAT returns are monthly submissions made by VAT-registered businesses and individuals, detailing the VAT collected from sales and the VAT paid on purchases during the period. The goal is to calculate the net VAT liability or any refunds that may be owed.

As part of these changes, taxpayers are now required to issue electronic invoices and transmit the invoice data to KRA through the Tax Invoice Management System (TIMS) or eTIMS.

Claims for input VAT that are not supported by these systems, or by customs import declarations for VAT on imports, will not be accepted.

While KRA will pre-fill the VAT returns, taxpayers are still responsible for verifying that the information in their declarations is accurate before submission.

This is why Kenya Power has emphasized the importance of updating personal and business details, to ensure that VAT claims linked to electricity bills are processed without any issues.
