Rongo MP Arrested Over Alleged Corruption and Misuse of Public Funds

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Thursday arrested Rongo Member of Parliament Paul Abuor in connection with allegations of conflict of interest and the theft of public funds.

According to EACC detectives, the arrest stems from tenders worth Ksh122 million awarded by the Rongo National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to companies linked to the MP.

The transactions allegedly took place during the 2017/2018 to 2024/2025 financial years and were carried out in collaboration with a close relative of the legislator.

Investigations revealed that the MP had registered a private company, which was then awarded lucrative contracts for constructing classrooms and drilling boreholes worth Ksh122 million.

In addition, the detectives uncovered another case where the MP’s assistant registered a separate company, which subsequently received payments totaling Ksh19.6 million from the Rongo Constituency NG-CDF.

The EACC noted that the MP authorized his personal assistant to operate the second company, granting them full control, including access to the company’s bank accounts.

“Through this company, the personal assistant received payments amounting to Ksh19.6 million. The assistant serves as the sole director and is the only signatory to the firm’s bank accounts,” the commission disclosed.

While addressing the public following the arrest, EACC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdi Mohamud explained that the operation is part of a wider investigation targeting misuse of public funds, particularly embezzlement within the NG-CDF.

He also revealed ongoing investigations into the misuse of other devolved funds, including the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) and the Women Enterprise Fund (WEF).

Mohamud highlighted that such embezzlement schemes are often facilitated through conflicts of interest, fraudulent payments for non-existent services, and ghost worker schemes.

“During the operation, the suspect was apprehended and taken to the EACC Headquarters at Integrity Centre, where he is currently recording a statement,” the commission stated in its report.

The EACC CEO urged public officials to uphold their duty to serve citizens responsibly, emphasizing that the abuse of trust and power not only violates the law but also undermines public confidence.

“State officers must stop misusing their positions for personal gain at the expense of the very people they are elected or appointed to serve,” Mohamud stated.

This case underscores the EACC’s commitment to holding public officials accountable and ensuring public resources are utilized for their intended purposes.
