Recent reports indicate that former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was assaulted by an angry crowd.
The assailants claimed they had not received full payment after allegedly being hired to disrupt a prayer event led by Pastor Dorcas Rigathi in Nyeri last weekend.
The incident underscores the volatile nature of political and social tensions in the region.
The prayer meeting at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri was abruptly interrupted when Njenga arrived with a convoy of supporters.
His unexpected appearance caused panic among attendees, leading to the swift evacuation of Pastor Dorcas and other leaders. Njenga’s supporters, chanting slogans, took over the venue, further escalating tensions.
In the aftermath, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua condemned the disruption, accusing the government of deploying criminal elements to interfere with peaceful religious gatherings.
He stated, “Unleashing the leader of an outlawed criminal gang and his goons to disrupt peaceful prayers and desecrate the altar is the lowest any government can go, no matter the level of desperation.”
This incident highlights the deepening divisions and the complex interplay between politics and religion in the area.
