ODM Secretary General Dares Party Members Supporting Government to Leave

ODM Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, has issued a bold challenge to members of his party who are supporting the government, daring them to leave and join the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

This comes months after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s decision to collaborate with President William Ruto to form a more inclusive Cabinet.

Sifuna’s remarks were made on Sunday while accompanying Wiper Party Leader, Kalonzo Musyoka.

During his speech, Sifuna emphasized that ODM’s primary role is to advocate for Kenyans as the opposition party.

He expressed disappointment in some party members who were reportedly aligning themselves with the government, going against the party’s core principles.

Sifuna, also the Nairobi County Senator, openly criticized those within the party who seemed to have forgotten the roots of ODM and its mission.

He pointed out that some members had expressed frustration with being in the opposition, claiming they were “tired of fighting for Kenyans.”

To these individuals, Sifuna had a clear message: “If you are tired of fighting for Kenyans, just leave the party and join UDA to be with Ruto.

There’s no need to pretend to support a president who represents a different party while you are still a member of ODM. If you’re tired of ODM, go to Ruto’s party.”

Sifuna did not stop there. He took the opportunity to criticize new members who had recently joined ODM but were already looking to align themselves with the government after just a short time.

He accused these members of undermining the party’s role as the opposition and its mission to keep the government in check.

Sifuna further condemned the Kenya Kwanza government, calling it a “government of corruption, killers, and abductors,” a sharp attack that underscored his frustrations with the current administration.

While his views have sparked controversy within the party before, Sifuna made it clear that he had no intentions of leaving ODM or stepping down from his role as Secretary General.

Just a week prior, during the burial of former Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) chair, Roseline Odede, Sifuna expressed similar concerns.

He openly criticized ODM members who were turning a blind eye to the party’s opposition duties by siding with President Ruto. He passionately declared, “We must stop being sycophants.

If something is wrong, it is wrong. I will not participate in the actions of ODM members who are benefiting from Ruto’s government and hindering my efforts to call out the government.”

He also reminded ODM leader Raila Odinga of a conversation they had when Odinga expressed his ambition to run for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

At that time, Odinga had insisted that ODM should retain its identity as a beacon of hope for Kenyans, a sentiment Sifuna vowed to uphold, regardless of the outcome of Odinga’s AU bid.

He accused the party’s members of trying to silence him, noting that this internal strife could affect the ODM leader’s chances at the AUC.
