A church service at Ebeneza SDA Church in Ramoya village, Samba Sub-location, Suba South Constituency, Homa Bay County, turned tragic on Saturday after a heated love triangle ended in bloodshed.
Francis Opiyo, a respected elder at the church, was fatally stabbed by his fellow elder in front of shocked worshippers. The incident occurred just moments after Francis had finished reading church reports to the congregation.
According to witnesses, as Francis was transitioning to the next segment of the service, another church elder calmly walked to the altar.
Without warning, he pulled out a knife that he had concealed inside a Bible and swiftly plunged it into Francis’ chest, specifically on the left side.
The brutal attack left the victim collapsing to the ground, unable to recover.
Reports indicate that the attacker, whose name has not been disclosed, was allegedly driven by jealousy. He accused Francis of having an affair with his wife, who is also a member of the church.
Following the shocking act, the assailant fled the scene but later surrendered himself to the area Assistant Chief. Meanwhile, Francis was quickly rushed to the hospital, but despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Confirming the incident, Suba South Sub-County Police Commander, Caxton Ndunda, stated that the suspect has been taken into custody and is currently being held at Magunga Police Station as investigations continue.
The tragic event has left the church and the entire community in deep shock, with many struggling to come to terms with the horrifying attack that unfolded in a place of worship.
