Luke Opwora, a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Bungoma County, was among four MCAs who forcibly removed the newly appointed principal of Friends School Kamusinga, Mr. Alex Maina, from his office.
The group, which included Aggrey Mulongo (Kibingei ward), Elvis Abuka (Milima ward), and Stephen Wafula, disrupted school activities and halted the admission of Form One students.
This action led to a directive from then-Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for their immediate arrest. Subsequently, reports emerged that the MCAs had fled to Uganda to evade arrest.
In December 2020, during a fundraiser at Christ the King Cathedral in Bungoma, tensions escalated when Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi confronted Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala over remarks made during the event.
The situation intensified as hired individuals, allegedly under the direction of local political figures, attacked visiting leaders, including Senators from Vihiga, Bungoma, and Kakamega counties.
The confrontation extended outside the church, where vehicles belonging to the visiting dignitaries were stoned, highlighting the volatile political climate in the region.
In January 2025, concerns were raised about a county leader in Bungoma who had reportedly recruited youths across various wards to suppress critics and political opponents.
This individual, described as familiar with controversy, allegedly employed these groups to prevent adversaries from speaking at public events, including funerals.
The strategy created an atmosphere of fear, causing some leaders with aspirations for county positions to avoid public functions.
