Ruto’s Phone Call With US Secretary of State Marco Rubio: Key Details

President William Ruto had a phone conversation on Thursday evening with the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, where they discussed key matters, including the ongoing Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti.

During the call, both leaders reviewed the diplomatic relations between Kenya and the United States, reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation.

Ruto emphasized Kenya’s dedication to global peace efforts, while Secretary Rubio reassured him that the US had not withdrawn its support for the Haiti peacekeeping mission, as some reports had claimed.

The discussion highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum in the mission, which aims to stabilize Haiti and restore law and order. Both leaders acknowledged that continued international support is essential for the success of the operation.

Another key topic of discussion was regional peace and security in Africa, particularly the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

President Ruto updated Secretary Rubio on an upcoming joint meeting between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC).

The meeting, scheduled for Friday, February 7, and Saturday, February 8, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is part of a broader effort to address the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC and seek lasting solutions.

Ruto’s phone conversation with Rubio came a day after reports surfaced online, claiming that the US had withdrawn from the Haiti peacekeeping mission and frozen Ksh1.7 million in funding.

The reports alleged that US President Donald Trump had written to the United Nations (UN) announcing the withdrawal.

However, the US government quickly dismissed these claims, clarifying that it had not halted all assistance for Haiti’s MSS mission.

On Thursday, February 6, the US released a statement confirming that Secretary Rubio had approved financial waivers to ensure millions of dollars in mission-critical support for the MSS operation and the Haitian National Police.

Additionally, the Trump administration revealed that as recently as Wednesday, February 5, the US had delivered heavy armored equipment to Haiti to support both the MSS mission and the Haitian National Police in Port-au-Prince. This move reinforced America’s continued commitment to stabilizing the country and aiding peacekeeping efforts.

The phone conversation between President Ruto and Secretary Rubio underscored the strong diplomatic ties between Kenya and the United States, as well as their mutual dedication to global security and stability.
