MP Sarah Korere Clashes with Gachagua’s Allies at Burial Ceremony

A burial ceremony in Laikipia North on Monday, February 10, turned dramatic after MP Sarah Korere confronted allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over their political activities.

Speaking passionately during the church service, Korere criticized Gachagua’s supporters for constantly using public gatherings, including funerals, to advance their political agenda.

She expressed her disappointment, stating that such events should be respected and not turned into political battlegrounds.

“I am a Catholic, and I do not want to see people disrespecting the altar by engaging in political theatrics.

Where I come from, funerals are meant for mourning and paying respect to the deceased, not for unnecessary political sideshows,” Korere declared, leaving the audience in shock.

She did not hold back on Gachagua himself, questioning his recent call for the Mount Kenya region to abandon President William Ruto’s government.

Korere reminded mourners that Gachagua had been a key figure in the same administration until a few months ago.

“You played a big role in forming the Kenya Kwanza government. Yet now, you are the one telling people to abandon it.

Not long ago, the former DP even called me ‘tough-headed’ and accused me, along with Uhuru and Raila, of being on the losing side,” she added, reaffirming her loyalty to President Ruto’s leadership.

Korere further criticized Gachagua’s allies for constantly addressing political matters in their native dialect when speaking in Central Kenya, suggesting that it was an attempt to divide people along tribal lines.

Her remarks sparked a strong reaction from Gachagua’s supporters in attendance, with some rising to their feet and waving their hands in protest.

When it was his turn to speak, Gachagua addressed the situation by apologizing to the bishop for Korere’s remarks. He accused the MP of disrespecting the community and using the platform to insult him and his supporters.

“Bishop, on behalf of all political leaders, I sincerely apologize for the disrespect you have witnessed from that MP, who happens to be a strong ally of President Ruto,” Gachagua said.

The fiery exchange added a new layer to the ongoing political tensions in Central Kenya. The incident occurred just a day after Gachagua made a bold declaration during a televised interview, announcing that the Mount Kenya region had officially withdrawn its support for President Ruto and would not back his re-election bid in 2027.

“From this moment, Central Kenya has politically disengaged from President Ruto. We will not support his re-election in 2027,” Gachagua stated during the interview on Sunday, February 9.

Accusing Ruto of betraying the region, the former Deputy President also issued a warning to politicians from Mount Kenya who remain loyal to the current government. He vowed to lead a campaign against them in the next general elections to ensure they are rejected by voters.

“Those who trade our people’s support for their selfish interests will never hold leadership positions in Mount Kenya again,” Gachagua declared.

The heated political debate highlights the deepening rift within the Mount Kenya political scene, with leaders taking sides as the 2027 elections draw closer.
