Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, often attracting attention due to various controversies.

In August 2022, he was implicated in a tragic incident where he allegedly shot and killed Brian Olunga, an aide to his political rival, Brian Khaemba, at Chebukwabi Primary School during the vote-counting process. Following the incident, the Director of Public Prosecutions ordered his arrest.

In August 2024, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) summoned Barasa over undisclosed bribery allegations related to a transaction that occurred in December 2023.

This was the second summons after he failed to appear on a prior date. The EACC warned that failure to respond could lead to the inquiry proceeding without his input.

Barasa’s legal challenges date back to 2020 when he was charged with fraudulently obtaining KSh 450,000 from an individual by pretending he could sell him a car.

He faced additional charges related to the fraudulent disposition of a mortgaged vehicle.

In July 2024, Barasa publicly criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, blaming him for the invasion of parliament by Gen Z protesters.

This incident highlighted tensions within the political landscape and Barasa’s willingness to confront high-ranking officials.

Throughout his career, Barasa has been a polarizing figure, with his actions and statements often sparking debate.

His involvement in various legal and political controversies has kept him in the public eye, reflecting the complex nature of Kenyan politics.
