US Embassy Dismisses Fake Report on Ruto-Al Shabaab Meeting

The United States Embassy has flagged as fake a circulating press release that alleged President William Ruto had met with Al Shabaab leaders. The embassy dismissed the document on Friday, February 14, calling it false and misleading.

The false claims emerged following unverified reports that Ruto had held discussions with Al Shabaab leaders during one of his recent trips. Such claims raised serious concerns, given the terrorist group’s history of violent attacks that have resulted in massive loss of life and destruction in Kenya.

Al Shabaab’s Deadly Attacks in Kenya

Al Shabaab has been a significant security threat in Kenya and the East African region since the late 2000s. The militant group has orchestrated multiple deadly attacks, killing hundreds and leaving many more injured or traumatized.

In Kenya alone, Al Shabaab has carried out several devastating attacks, with four major incidents standing out:

  1. Westgate Mall Attack (2013) – The group laid siege to the Nairobi shopping mall for nearly three days, killing 67 people.
  2. Lamu/Mpeketoni Attacks (2014) – A brutal assault left 48 people dead.
  3. Garissa University Attack (2015) – One of Kenya’s deadliest attacks, where 148 people, mostly students, were massacred.
  4. Dusit D2 Hotel Attack (2019) – A terrorist raid in Nairobi led to the deaths of 14 people.

Additionally, in 1998, the US Embassy in Nairobi was bombed by Al-Qaeda, Al Shabaab’s ideological ally, killing over 200 people.

Fake Statement Sparks Controversy

The now-flagged statement claimed that the US Embassy was aware of the supposed meeting between President Ruto and Al Shabaab and strongly condemned it. The document labeled the alleged meeting as a “blatant disregard for the shared values of peace, security, and the rule of law.”

A portion of the fake statement read:

“The United States Government has learned with grave concern and profound disappointment of reports that President William Ruto of Kenya has secretly engaged in discussions with the leadership of Al-Shabaab, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization responsible for the deaths of countless innocent civilians, including American citizens.”

The document went on to state that any form of cooperation with the terrorist group would undermine international security efforts and threaten global peace.

US Support in the Fight Against Al Shabaab

The United States has been a crucial partner in counterterrorism efforts against Al Shabaab. Over the years, the US has provided billions of dollars in funding to train and equip regional peacekeeping forces, including Kenyan and Somali security agencies.

Furthermore, the US military has carried out targeted airstrikes against Al Shabaab strongholds in Somalia. In 2017, then-President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of US troops to the region for counterterrorism operations, though they were later withdrawn.

Concerns Over Kenya’s Commitment to Counterterrorism

The fake press release suggested that Kenya’s alleged engagement with Al Shabaab would raise serious concerns about its commitment to regional security and counterterrorism efforts. It also warned that such actions could have severe consequences for Kenya’s diplomatic ties with the US.

The statement concluded with a stern warning:

“Any cooperation with Al-Shabaab, directly or indirectly, is unacceptable and will have severe consequences for the bilateral relationship between our two nations.”

Although the document has been flagged as fake, its circulation stirred debate over Kenya’s stance on terrorism and its relationship with international partners in the fight against extremism.
