President Ruto Leads Kenya in Mourning Former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati
President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who died on Friday.
In a heartfelt statement on his X account, President Ruto paid tribute to Chebukati, describing him as a dedicated and principled leader who served Kenya with integrity. The President expressed deep sorrow, calling Chebukati’s death a significant loss to the country.
“I have received the sad news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with great sorrow,” Ruto stated.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who knew and worked with him during this painful time. May he rest in peace,” he added.
Several other high-ranking government officials also expressed their condolences, recognizing Chebukati’s contribution to Kenya’s electoral system. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen were among those who paid tribute to the late electoral chief.
Speaker Wetang’ula described Chebukati as a man of integrity and dignity, highlighting his dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparent electoral processes. He emphasized that Chebukati’s passing is a major loss to Kenya’s legal and electoral governance sectors.
“During his tenure as the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, he executed his duties with remarkable courage and a strong commitment to the Constitution,” Wetang’ula stated.
“Even when faced with tremendous pressure and challenges, he stood firm, honoring his oath of office and remaining devoted to fairness and transparency,” he added.
Interior CS Murkomen also mourned Chebukati, describing him as a true patriot who remained committed to the Constitution and electoral integrity.
“He was a man of great integrity who steered the IEBC through two crucial elections with professionalism and dedication,” Murkomen said.
Chebukati passed away while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, just days after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His health had deteriorated following several days of treatment at home.
A family member confirmed his passing to Kenyans.co.ke on Friday morning. However, details regarding the cause of his illness and death remain undisclosed, as those close to him have chosen to keep the matter private.
Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson for six years, from 2017 until his retirement in 2023. During his tenure, he presided over the 2017 and 2022 general elections, navigating significant political and legal challenges while leading the commission. His role in Kenya’s electoral history remains pivotal, and his passing marks the end of an era in the country’s democratic governance.
