Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati to Be Laid to Rest on March 8, 2025

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati will be buried on March 8, 2025, at his home in Sabata village, near Kitale in Trans Nzoia County.

His family confirmed the burial date through a statement issued by their spokesperson, Eric Wafula Nyongesa.

While addressing the media, Nyongesa disclosed that Chebukati had been battling brain cancer, which led to multiple surgeries as part of his treatment. He revealed that the former IEBC chairperson suffered a cardiac arrest on the night of Thursday, February 20, 2025, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

According to the family spokesperson, Chebukati was first diagnosed with a brain tumor and later traveled to Germany, where he underwent surgery to have it removed. Unfortunately, in April 2024, doctors discovered that the tumor had reappeared, forcing him to return to Germany for a second surgery.

After undergoing the procedure, Chebukati returned to Kenya but was later admitted to the hospital in December 2024 when doctors confirmed that the tumor had recurred once again.

He was discharged after receiving treatment but had to be re-admitted on February 12, 2025. As his health deteriorated, he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he suffered a cardiac arrest a week later, leading to his death on February 20, 2025.

Amid speculation surrounding his condition before his passing, the family strongly refuted claims circulating on social media that he had been declared “clinically dead” days before his actual demise.

“At no point was the immediate family informed that he was clinically dead,” Nyongesa clarified, dismissing the misleading reports.

The family has also confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted on Chebukati’s body before his final send-off on March 8 at his home in Kitale.

Chebukati, who was born on December 22, 1961, had an illustrious career in public service. He served as the IEBC chairperson for six years until his retirement in 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw Kenya’s general elections in 2017 and 2022.

For his education, Chebukati attended Lenana High School in Nairobi before enrolling at the University of Nairobi (UoN), where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
