Bus Attack Leaves Two Dead and Several Injured in Samburu

A tragic attack on a passenger bus has left two people dead and 10 others nursing serious injuries in what is believed to be a banditry-related assault.

The incident took place on Thursday, February 27, when armed attackers, suspected to be from Samburu North, ambushed a bus traveling from Maralal to Baragoi.

According to reports, the attack occurred around 6 p.m., and the two deceased victims, who were bus conductors, died instantly at the scene.

Passengers who survived recounted the horrifying ordeal, stating that the gunmen started firing at the bus from a distance, forcing the driver to stop. The assailants then boarded the vehicle and began issuing threats to the terrified passengers.

“They allowed the first bus to pass, but when we arrived, they opened fire on us. We have been living under constant threats. I managed to record part of the attack using my phone,” a survivor narrated.

Emergency responders and locals administered first aid to the injured before they were taken to Samburu County Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Following the attack, leaders from the region strongly criticized the government, blaming authorities for failing to address the rising insecurity in the area. They called for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of lives due to repeated attacks by armed groups.

Similar Attacks in the Region

This is not the first time such an attack has taken place in northern Kenya. In September last year, armed assailants ambushed a Nairobi-bound bus along the Moyale-Isiolo route, opening fire on the vehicle.

The attack resulted in the death of one passenger, while six others sustained serious injuries. The victims were rushed to Sololo Mission Hospital, but one of them succumbed to the injuries while being transported to the facility.

Similarly, in June last year, suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a bus along the Wajir-Mandera highway. The heavily armed attackers forced the passengers to disembark before issuing threats. Fortunately, none of the 55 passengers on board were killed, although several sustained injuries during the ordeal.

The latest attack in Samburu has reignited concerns over the security situation in northern Kenya, with residents and local leaders calling for immediate government intervention to curb the rising cases of banditry and terrorism-related violence.
