President Ruto Announces Plans for New University in Baringo

President William Ruto has revealed that the government will begin constructing the Baringo University College of Technology (BUCT) in April 2025.

Speaking during the burial ceremony of Baringo Senator William Cheptumo on Saturday, March 1, the president said the project will start as soon as the Commission for University Education approves the proposal.

“We have submitted the request to the Commission for University Education, and once the approvals are finalized in the next month, we will begin the construction of the university in April, God willing,” Ruto stated.

The president emphasized that the late Cheptumo was passionate about improving education in Baringo, and the university will serve as a tribute to his efforts in promoting education in the county.

“I had discussions with Cheptumo and other leaders from Baringo regarding the establishment of the university. I want to thank all leaders for supporting the project. Public participation has already been conducted, and I have received confirmation that the community has agreed,” Ruto said.

The president expressed regret that Cheptumo will not witness the project’s completion, but assured the residents that his dream will become a reality.

“I know Cheptumo lying here will not be able to see Baringo University become a reality, but his family and all of you will witness his vision come to life,” he added.

The proposed university will be built in Kabarnet town, approximately 90 kilometers (about two hours) from President Ruto’s hometown, Sugoi. Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma confirmed that five local MPs agreed on Kabarnet as the ideal location due to the availability of land and its strategic location as the county headquarters.

Sirma explained that the university will boost the county’s economy by attracting investors and creating jobs. Additionally, satellite campuses will be set up across various sub-counties in Baringo to improve access to higher education.

President Ruto highlighted that the government’s investment in infrastructure development in remote areas is part of a broader plan to promote equitable growth across the country.

“The same way we are constructing highways in Nairobi and other developed areas, we must also uplift remote regions to ensure economic transformation and equity for all Kenyans,” he stated.

The construction of Baringo University is expected to open more educational opportunities, create jobs, and boost economic development in the region.
