Several people, including students returning to school after the half-term break, sustained serious injuries in a multi-vehicle accident along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway at Timboroa, Nakuru County.

The crash happened on Tuesday afternoon when a matatu heading towards Nakuru lost control and collided with an oncoming lorry. The impact caused the lorry to veer off and crash into a private car, worsening the situation.

Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene to assist in rescuing passengers trapped in the wreckage. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Videos and photos from the accident site showed the matatu severely damaged, with its frame crumpled from the impact. The lorry was seen leaning on one side, while the private car had significant damage at the front.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion on the busy highway, forcing some motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid the gridlock. Police officers are currently at the scene managing traffic and assessing the situation. However, the exact number of injured individuals is yet to be confirmed.

Second Accident in Nandi County Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

This tragic incident comes just hours after another serious accident along the Nandi Hills-Kopere Highway in Nandi County, which left 21 people injured, including 19 students.

The crash occurred on Monday, March 3, and resulted in the tragic death of a Form Four student. Seven other people, including the driver and conductor, sustained severe head injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident happened when a 14-seater matatu lost control, rolled multiple times, and finally came to a stop in a thicket beside the road.

Reacting to the accident, Tinderet MP Julius Kibiwot condemned the laxity of traffic police officers who were supposed to be monitoring the road. He criticized them for allowing an overloaded matatu to operate, endangering the lives of passengers.

“How can a Nissan matatu, which is legally allowed to carry only 11 passengers, be on the road with 19 students, a driver, and a conductor? The police officers responsible must explain how this happened,” Kibiwot told journalists outside Nandi Hills Hospital, where the injured victims were receiving treatment.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during peak travel seasons, to prevent such tragic accidents. Meanwhile, investigations into both accidents are ongoing to determine the exact causes and prevent future occurrences.
