10 ODM Leaders Who Have Landed Key Positions After Ruto-Raila Agreement

Several leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have emerged as major beneficiaries of a political pact between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The agreement, signed just a week ago, has seen ODM politicians secure influential positions in key parliamentary committees, signaling the seriousness of the newfound working relationship between the two political sides.

ODM Leaders Who Gained from the Pact

The agreement between Raila and Ruto, which brought together the ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), is aimed at fostering national unity.

As part of the deal, several ODM lawmakers have been appointed to powerful committees in Parliament, giving them a stronger say in decision-making and policy formulation.

Here are some of the big winners from ODM:

  • Samuel Atandi – Elected as the Chairperson of the Budget Committee, replacing Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
  • James Nyikal – Appointed as the Chairperson of the Health Committee and also became Vice Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee.
  • Bernard Shinyali – Took over as the Chairperson of the Trade Committee.
  • Irene Mayaka – Named the Chairperson of the Regional Integration Committee.
  • Emmanuel Wangwe – Appointed as the Chairperson of the Public Investments Committee (PIC) on Social Service Administration and Agriculture.
  • Eve Obara – Became the Vice Chairperson of the Education Committee.
  • Tindi Mwale – Won the position of Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) after a closely contested race against Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, securing nine votes against Amollo’s six.
  • John Ariko Namoit – Appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the Public Investments Committee (PIC) on Energy and Commercial Affairs.
  • Charles Ongondo Were – Secured the role of Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee.

How the Appointments Reshaped Political Alignments

The strategic placements of these ODM leaders were made possible through concessions within the Kenya Kwanza camp, where some allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were sidelined to accommodate the new entrants.

Despite the celebrations among ODM and UDA allies, not everyone is pleased with the agreement. Some leaders within the ruling coalition, particularly those who have been left out of key roles, have openly criticized the move.

Ruto and Raila’s Justification for the Agreement

When signing the agreement, both Ruto and Raila emphasized the importance of setting aside political differences to work together for the benefit of all Kenyans.

They acknowledged that Kenya has vast potential, but its growth has been hindered by ethnic divisions and policies that have historically sidelined certain regions.

“For Kenya to reach its full potential, we must move beyond old political rivalries and embrace a vision that unites us as a nation,” they stated.

This new partnership between the two leaders is expected to have far-reaching political implications, reshaping the balance of power within Parliament while also influencing the country’s future governance.
