Kenyan Athletes Sweep Podium at Rome Marathon, Bagging Millions in Prize Money

Kenyan runners dominated the 30th edition of the Rome Marathon in Italy, securing the top three positions and walking away with millions in prize money.

The prestigious race, held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, saw Kenyan athletes Robert Ng’eno, Brian Kipsang, and Joshua Kogo finish in first, second, and third place, respectively, achieving a clean podium sweep.

The marathon attracted over 27,000 participants from different nationalities, with the 42-kilometer course beginning at Via dei Fori Imperiali, near the iconic Colosseum, and concluding at the historic Circo Massimo.

Prize Money for the Winners

Robert Ng’eno, who emerged victorious, clocked an impressive time of 2:07:35 and was awarded €16,500 (approximately Ksh2.3 million).

Following closely behind, Brian Kipsang secured second place with a time of 2:07:58, earning Ksh1.1 million. Joshua Kogo, finishing third with a time of 2:08:01, took home Ksh760,964.95 in prize money.

Other top Kenyan finishers included Kibii Fred, Cherop Hamington, Kiptoo Samuel, and Kiprop Tum, who claimed the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively. Another Kenyan athlete, Tumo David Barmasi, finished in ninth place, further cementing Kenya’s dominance in the race.

Kenyan Women Also Shine

Kenyan female athletes also put on a stellar performance in the women’s category. Betty Chepkwony secured victory, finishing the race in 2:26:16 and pocketing Ksh2.3 million.

Rebecca Kangogo claimed third place with a time of 2:31:16, earning Ksh760,965.

Other Notable Performances

Uganda’s Kibet Samuel finished in 12th place with a time of 2:23:16, making him one of the top finishers from Kenya’s neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, Tanui Euliter crossed the finish line in 22nd place, completing the marathon in 2:33:07.

Distinguished Guests and Supporters

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Kenya’s Ambassador to Italy, Fredrick Matwang’a.

A large number of Kenyans living in the diaspora also attended the marathon, cheering loudly as their compatriots dominated the race.

The outstanding performance of Kenyan athletes at the Rome Marathon once again highlighted the country’s excellence in long-distance running, reinforcing its reputation as a powerhouse in global athletics.
