Fake Police Gang Robs Petrol Station, Two Arrested
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects who pretended to be police officers and robbed a petrol station along Mandera Road in Wajir.
In a statement released on Thursday, March 20, the DCI confirmed that the two criminals were caught after a distress call alerted officers to the robbery in progress.
When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered that a group of five individuals, dressed in police uniforms, had forcefully entered the petrol station and overpowered the workers in a well-planned night raid.
The gang tied up the night security guard and the pump attendant using ropes before stealing Ksh30,000 in cash.
However, their escape was short-lived as law enforcement officers responded swiftly, managing to arrest two of the suspects before they could flee far.
During the arrest, the officers recovered several incriminating items, including a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military-style jungle trouser, and a military jungle jacket, all of which were being used to disguise their identities.
The two suspects were immediately taken into custody, where they are being processed ahead of their court appearance.
Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for the remaining three suspects, who managed to escape during a high-speed chase with the police.
This incident is just one among many where criminals have been caught impersonating law enforcement officers to commit crimes.
In October 2024, DCI officers arrested a man in Narok who had been posing as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer to intimidate and exploit residents.
According to those living in the area, the fake soldier had instilled fear among them for a long time.
A search of his home during the arrest led to the discovery of multiple national identity cards belonging to different individuals, along with uniforms from both the Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Army.
These cases highlight a worrying trend where criminals disguise themselves as security officers to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims before committing crimes.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals posing as law enforcement officers.
