Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Speaks on Missing Ruto’s Kamukunji Rally

Westlands Member of Parliament, Tim Wanyonyi, has finally addressed claims that he deliberately skipped President William Ruto’s Kamukunji rally in Nairobi.

Speaking during an interview with Milele FM on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Wanyonyi dismissed rumors suggesting that he was avoiding Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who is expected to be his political rival in the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

He also refuted allegations that his absence from the prayer meeting at Bomas for Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) bid was due to personal differences with other leaders.

Wanyonyi explained that he was out of the country for an important engagement at the time, which made it impossible for him to attend the event.

“I was not at Bomas for Baba’s prayer event because I was traveling. Some leaders had already organized the prayers, and they were there to support him. I was well aware of the event, but I could not attend because I was away,” Wanyonyi clarified.

Addressing his absence at President Ruto’s Kamukunji rally, Wanyonyi stated that he was busy handling community-related issues at the grassroots level.

Criticism of Sakaja’s Leadership

The Westlands MP did not hold back when talking about Governor Sakaja’s leadership, arguing that the governor has done little to improve the lives of Nairobi residents.

He stated that the county is still facing many challenges due to poor governance under Sakaja’s administration.

Wanyonyi also dismissed speculations that ODM leader Raila Odinga was secretly supporting Sakaja, claiming that the governor was the one actively seeking Raila’s endorsement.

He noted that Sakaja had been following the former Prime Minister to various events in an attempt to gain political backing.

“Sakaja attends all of Raila’s events, trying to appear close to him, but in reality, he is just looking for attention. He is the Governor of Nairobi, but he is not an ODM member,” Wanyonyi remarked.

2027 Gubernatorial Race

Wanyonyi made it clear that Sakaja should not assume he is part of the ODM party, urging him to remain in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

However, he stated that if Sakaja wanted to join ODM, he would be welcomed, but he would have to go through the proper party processes.

“If he wants to leave UDA and join us, he is welcome, but there is a long queue. If he decides to contest for the Nairobi governor’s seat under ODM, then we will compete fairly, and the people will decide who is the best candidate,” Wanyonyi stated.

The Westlands MP expressed confidence that he would defeat Sakaja in the 2027 elections, regardless of the political party his opponent chooses to run under.
