The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country over the next five days, from Friday, March 21, to Tuesday, March 25.

In its latest forecast released on Friday, March 21, the department urged Kenyans living in different regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and North-Eastern Kenya, to brace for significant downpours.

Regions Expected to Experience Heavy Rainfall

Among the areas expected to receive heavy rains are counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley. These include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi. According to the meteorological department, these regions will mostly experience rainfall in the afternoon, often accompanied by thunderstorms.

A similar weather pattern has been predicted in several counties within the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet. These regions are also likely to experience heavy showers, especially later in the day.

Other counties that are expected to receive substantial rainfall include Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. Residents in these areas have been advised to prepare for wet conditions and possible disruptions caused by the heavy rains.

Moderate and Light Rainfall in Other Regions

While some areas will experience intense downpours, others will receive moderate rainfall. The forecast indicates that counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with inland areas of Tana River, will experience moderate showers over the five-day period.

Meanwhile, coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as eastern counties like Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will experience lighter showers.

Cold Nights and Rising Daytime Temperatures

Apart from the rainfall, the Kenya Meteorological Department has also cautioned residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi to prepare for very cold nights.

According to the forecast, nighttime temperatures in these regions will drop to 8°C for the first two days before slightly increasing to 9°C for the remainder of the forecast period.

At the same time, certain parts of Kenya will experience high daytime temperatures. Counties expected to face extreme heat during the day include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi.

Additionally, regions in northern Kenya, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will experience exceptionally hot daytime temperatures. Residents in these areas have been advised to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions against the heat.

Advisory to the Public

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged citizens in affected areas to remain cautious and prepared for potential disruptions caused by the changing weather conditions.

Motorists are advised to drive carefully due to slippery roads, and residents in flood-prone areas should take preventive measures to stay safe.

The department will continue monitoring weather patterns and issue further updates as needed.
