UDA Announces Changes in Grassroot Elections

UDA Extends Registration Deadline for Grassroots Elections

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced an extension to the registration deadline for candidates aspiring to participate in the upcoming Phase II of the grassroots elections.

In an official statement released on Saturday, March 22, the Chairman of the National Election Board (NEB), Anthony Mwaura, confirmed that the registration period has been extended until midnight on March 26, 2025. Previously, the deadline was set for March 21, 2025.

“The National Elections Board of UDA officially notifies all aspirants that the registration period for candidates in the upcoming Phase II elections has been extended from March 21, 2025, to March 26, 2025, at midnight,” Mwaura said in the statement.

He further encouraged all potential candidates to take full advantage of this extension to ensure they secure their place in the grassroots elections, which are set to take place on April 11 and 12, 2025.

Despite the extension, Mwaura reassured that the elections would proceed as planned in 22 counties across the country.

On Friday, April 11, 2025, elections will be held in the following counties: Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, Turkana, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Migori, Siaya, and Kisumu.

On Saturday, April 12, 2025, elections will take place in Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River counties.

This announcement comes several months after UDA had to suspend grassroots elections in 14 counties due to the violent anti-finance bill demonstrations that shook the country in June and July 2024.

The National Election Board had issued a formal notice on June 26, 2024, to inform the public that the elections, initially scheduled for June 28 and 29, 2024, were being postponed.

“The National Election Board of UDA announces the postponement of the grassroots elections originally set for June 28 and 29, 2024, due to unavoidable circumstances,” Mwaura explained at the time.

The counties affected by the June 2024 suspension included Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Kisii, Bungoma, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Wajir, Kwale, Kitui, and Garissa.

In last year’s grassroots elections held in April 2024, the party faced several challenges, including system glitches that caused significant disruptions, despite the election process costing UDA approximately Ksh200 million.
