Tragedy struck Ramba High School on Saturday evening when two Form Four students lost their lives after a septic tank collapsed beneath them.
According to reports, the heartbreaking incident occurred around 6 PM while the students were socializing with their peers. The septic tank unexpectedly gave way, plunging the two boys into the pit.
Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Omollo took to social media to express his sorrow over the tragic loss. He revealed that investigations had already been launched to establish the circumstances that led to the incident.
“Another tragedy! Saddened to learn that two young boys from Ramba Boys High School have lost their lives after a septic tank collapsed! May their souls rest in peace as we continue investigating the circumstances,” Omollo stated.
Fortunately, several other students who were present at the scene escaped unharmed. However, two others sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Reports indicate that the Form Four students had just returned from an AIDS awareness rally before the accident occurred.
Witnesses say the deceased students were standing on top of the septic tank when it suddenly caved in.
In response, first responders from the Kenya Red Cross swiftly arrived at the scene and worked tirelessly through the night to retrieve the students’ bodies from the collapsed structure.
The tragic accident sparked outrage among parents and concerned Kenyans, who took to social media to express their frustration over what they termed as negligence on the part of the school administration.
Many questioned how such a hazardous structure was left unchecked, putting students’ lives at risk.
Siaya Governor James Orengo also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and the school community.
He assured the public that his administration is committed to enhancing the safety of learners across the county.
Governor Orengo further urged the school community to remain calm as investigations continue to determine what led to the fatal incident.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case, as Kenyan high schools have witnessed numerous tragic incidents in recent years.
From devastating dormitory fires to fatal road accidents, school safety remains a growing concern for students, parents, and education stakeholders.
