The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning to Kenyans living in different parts of the country, urging them to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days, from Thursday, March 28, to Monday, April 1.

In its latest weather advisory released on Friday, March 28, the department outlined regions expected to experience significant downpours.

These include the Highland East, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, and Western Kenya.

Among the areas set to receive heavy rains are counties in the Highland East, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

According to the forecast, rainfall in these areas is expected to begin in the afternoon and continue into the night.

The downpour will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms, posing potential risks such as flash floods and reduced visibility for motorists.

Similarly, residents in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions have been advised to prepare for heavy rainfall.

Affected counties include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet. Other counties expected to receive intense rainfall are Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

While most parts of the country will experience heavy rainfall, counties in the Coastal region—such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale—are forecast to receive moderate rainfall.

The same weather pattern is expected in other counties, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and some parts of Tana River.

Besides the heavy downpours, the weather department has also warned residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi to brace for extremely cold nights.

Night temperatures in these counties are expected to drop significantly, ranging between 11°C and 10°C in the first few days before falling further to as low as 7°C towards the end of the forecast period.

Meanwhile, the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions will experience a different weather trend, with unusually high daytime temperatures.

Counties such as Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, and Kericho are expected to experience intense heat during the day.

Temperatures in these areas will rise to around 35°C in the first two days and are forecast to increase to 37°C for the remaining days of the forecast period.

The meteorological department has advised residents to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period.
