Several Dead After Matatu and School Bus Collide Head-On in Molo

A tragic accident involving a matatu and a school bus occurred on the night of Friday, March 28, along the Molo-Keringet road, resulting in multiple fatalities and several injuries.

According to reports, the head-on collision claimed the lives of the matatu driver and several passengers, while others sustained injuries.

Conflicting reports suggest that at least five people lost their lives in the crash, but police have yet to confirm the exact number.

Although the exact cause of the accident remains unclear, preliminary findings indicate that the matatu driver may have lost control while navigating a sharp bend, leading to the deadly collision.

At the time of the accident, the school bus was en route to Keringet, while the matatu was traveling toward Molo.

Eyewitnesses quickly responded to the scene, offering assistance to the victims. The bodies of those who perished were taken to Keringet Sub-County Hospital, while the injured were rushed to different medical facilities for treatment.

Molo Police Commander Timon Odingo confirmed the incident and noted that, fortunately, none of the schoolchildren on the bus sustained injuries.

Following the crash, law enforcement officers were deployed to investigate the scene. Authorities pointed out that the accident happened under heavy rainfall, which reduced visibility and made the road dangerously slippery.

Kuresoi South Member of Parliament, Joseph Tonui, expressed his condolences through a statement on Facebook, mourning the tragic loss and extending his support to the affected families.

“I am deeply heartbroken by the tragic accident involving a school bus and a PSV matatu at Kimalany Bridge on the Keringet-Molo road. This is a devastating loss to the families and our community,” he wrote.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the bereaved families. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. To those who are injured, I wish you a speedy recovery,” he added.

This tragic accident comes just as the National Police Service (NPS) issued a warning to motorists, urging them to be extra cautious on the roads, especially with the Easter holiday rush approaching.

Authorities have also announced a crackdown on matatus violating traffic laws, warning that those found guilty of reckless driving will face severe consequences.

Additionally, the police sent a strong warning to school administrators regarding the safety of school vehicles, emphasizing the need for responsible driving when transporting students.

The police stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and called on all road users—including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, boda boda riders, and cyclists—to strictly adhere to traffic rules to prevent further tragedies.
