Government to Pay Boda Boda Riders

Senior Presidential Economic Council advisor Moses Kuria has announced that boda boda riders and Community Health Promoters (CHPs) who assist in enrolling Kenyans into the Social Health Authority (SHA) programme will receive a monetary reward.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, April 2, Kuria stated that any boda boda rider or CHP who helps someone register and start making payments towards SHA will earn a commission of Ksh20 per person.

Additionally, he revealed that the government has introduced a system that allows small daily deductions from mobile money accounts to make SHA payments more manageable for Kenyans.

“Every CHP or boda boda rider who assists someone in joining SHA and making payments will receive a Ksh20 commission,” Kuria stated. “We have also introduced a daily deduction system from mobile money to make it easier for people to pay for SHA,” he added.

Government Targets 40 Million Enrollments

According to Kuria, the government has set an ambitious target to register 40 million Kenyans into the SHA programme by the end of the year. He emphasized that the initiative is a key part of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the country.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale also confirmed that so far, 20.8 million Kenyans have registered for SHA, along with 5.7 million of their dependents.

SHA Gains International Recognition

The announcement comes just a day after Kuria hailed the SHA programme as a major success, claiming that other African nations, including Zambia and Egypt, are studying Kenya’s model.

He disclosed that a delegation from Zambia had already visited the country last month to understand how SHA operates, and another team from Egypt is expected to arrive next week for the same purpose.

“The Taifa Care programme is designed for every Kenyan, not just a select few. That is why I am passionate about it,” Kuria said.

“Two weeks ago, Zambia sent a delegation to study how we are implementing our healthcare system, and next week, a team from Egypt will be here to learn from our experience,” he added.

Billions Already Paid Out to Hospitals

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, April 1, CS Duale revealed that SHA has already disbursed Ksh25.4 billion to healthcare facilities contracted under the scheme.

“Payments from the Social Health Insurance Fund have reached Ksh22.2 billion, while an additional Ksh3.2 billion has been paid through the Primary Healthcare Fund,” he stated.

Kuria expressed confidence in the programme’s impact, even suggesting that President William Ruto could win a Nobel Prize for launching the initiative.

With the government pushing for 40 million registrations by year-end, SHA is set to play a crucial role in ensuring affordable healthcare for all Kenyans.
