Nakuru Resident Begins Process to Suspend County Government

A concerned resident of Nakuru County, Evans Kimori, has officially called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to guide the people of Nakuru in beginning the process of suspending the county government.

Kimori has criticized the current administration under Governor Susan Kihika, accusing it of failing in its duty to serve the citizens.

In a letter sent to the IEBC office in Nakuru on Monday, April 7, Kimori expressed deep concern over what he described as the county government’s incompetence.

He stated that the leadership has ignored the major concerns raised by residents and has not delivered essential services as expected.

Kimori requested the IEBC’s assistance in overseeing the signature collection process needed to initiate the suspension of the county government.

He argued that the county has failed to address serious issues such as the continued closure of the War Memorial Hospital, a disturbing case involving a missing child that is linked to the county mortuary, and ongoing harassment of youth by officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

He also criticized the county’s development record, saying that despite receiving funds from the national government, there is little to show on the ground.

According to him, the county’s failure to deliver key services and improve the lives of residents amounts to a betrayal of the devolution system.

“The County Assembly has completely failed in its role. Their silence, failure to act, and what seems like cooperation with the Governor’s office shows they have let the people down,” Kimori stated.

He added, “The same communities that voted these leaders into power are now suffering. Roads are in terrible condition, health centers are either shut down or have too few staff, the youth remain jobless, and basic services are falling apart. This is not what devolution was meant to be. We cannot sit and watch this continue.”

Kimori also expressed disappointment over Governor Susan Kihika’s prolonged absence, which he claimed has not been properly explained to the public.

He said that Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have failed to address this issue, despite it being their constitutional duty.

He pointed out that on March 20, 2025, he formally petitioned the County Assembly, asking them to summon the Governor or an official representative to explain why she has been away for so long.

He also wanted clarity on who has been in charge of county affairs during her absence and whether any legal procedures were followed to transfer power temporarily.

“Unfortunately, the County Assembly has ignored this petition, which is a clear violation of their responsibilities under the law,” Kimori stated.

The Governor’s absence has sparked growing concern in Nakuru. Recently, on March 26, Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja held a press briefing where she sharply criticized Governor Kihika.

The Senator condemned what she referred to as a one-year maternity leave, saying that the Governor left office without formally notifying the public or following official procedures.

“As we speak, the county government is at a standstill,” Senator Karanja said. “There are several critical matters that remain unresolved, including the reopening of the War Memorial Hospital.

A court ordered it to be reopened last year, but nothing has been done.”

Governor Kihika, who has been out of the country, has since indicated that she plans to return to Kenya in the middle of this month.
