ODM Threatens to Expel Members After Man is Hacked

ODM Warns Members of Expulsion After Violent Incident During Elections

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has issued a strong warning to individuals planning to interfere with its ongoing grassroots elections, following a violent incident where a man was attacked and seriously injured.

On Tuesday, April 8, ODM’s Secretary for Communication and Publicity, Rahab Robi, released a statement emphasizing that anyone found disrupting the party’s electoral process will face severe consequences, including being removed from the party entirely.

Robi highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline during the elections, urging all ODM members to act responsibly and respect each other’s choices.

“Party elections should be treated like a friendly game where every member has the right to vote for whoever they believe is best suited to lead, at any level of the party,” Robi explained.

“We are issuing a clear warning to any individual thinking of causing chaos during Wednesday’s election activities—such actions will not be tolerated, and those involved risk being expelled from the party,” he added.

The grassroots elections began on Monday, April 7, starting at the ward level and are scheduled to continue to the constituency level on Wednesday, April 9.

According to Robi, the majority of the regions across the country have reported smooth and peaceful election proceedings so far. Out of 1,450 wards nationwide, only three have experienced any form of disruption.

ODM confirmed that a few isolated cases of violence have been reported, specifically in Homa Bay County—where a man’s hand was chopped off—as well as in Nairobi and Nakuru counties. These incidents are currently under investigation.

Robi reiterated ODM’s strong belief in the importance of robust grassroots structures, stating that the party is committed to conducting fair and lawful elections as required by the Political Parties Act.

“ODM has never shied away from holding elections. We believe in transparent leadership and building from the grassroots level.

Our consistency in holding internal elections has even been acknowledged by the Registrar of Political Parties,” Robi stated.

He referred to the Registrar’s April 2024 report, which recognized ODM as the only political party fully compliant with legal requirements and electoral guidelines.

Wednesday’s constituency-level elections will only involve delegates who were elected during the ward-level elections.

The grassroots election process is being carried out through either a headcount or by a show of hands and is being supervised by county election committees.
