Malala Reveals Plans for Public Performance of ‘Echoes of War’

Former senator and playwright Cleophas Malala has announced that his much-talked-about stage play, Echoes of War, will now be performed publicly by adult Kenyan citizens.

This follows his release on Thursday, April 10, after being briefly held in police custody over the controversial production.

Speaking to the media shortly after his release, Malala explained that the decision to open up the play for public viewing was driven by the need to help Kenyans understand its meaning and purpose.

“We have decided that the play will now be showcased by adult performers, who do not require any permission to put on the performance.

We will select some of the finest acting talent in Kenya and organize public showings so that everyone can get the full message of the play,” Malala stated.

However, he did not disclose the specific venue, dates, or detailed plans for the public performances. More information on the logistics is expected in due course.

Echoes of War has been at the center of a national debate, especially after Butere Girls High School, which was initially chosen to perform it at the Kenya National Drama Festivals, was reportedly blocked from staging the play.

The move sparked controversy, with many speculating that powerful government officials may have played a role in censoring the production due to its bold themes.

The play touches on sensitive issues like politics, leadership, and governance—topics that have fueled public interest and scrutiny.

Many believe that its real-life reflections of the Kenyan political scene may have led to Malala’s arrest, as he was taken into custody and held at Eldama Ravine Police Station prior to his release.

Earlier on Thursday morning, tensions erupted at the drama festival venue when students from Butere Girls High School walked out in protest.

They cited unfair treatment and claimed that the stage setup was inadequate for their performance. The situation worsened when police officers reportedly used tear gas to disperse students who had gathered outside to express their frustration to journalists.

The planned performance was set to take place at Melvin Jones Hall Academy in Nakuru, but police had barred both members of the public and media from accessing the venue, adding to the growing tension surrounding the event.

Set in a fictional kingdom known as the Royal Velvet Emirates, Echoes of War portrays a deeply divided society. One generation desperately clings to old traditions while the younger generation pushes for change through modern technology and innovative thinking.

While the storyline is fictional, its themes and dialogue closely mirror Kenya’s current political climate and societal struggles, making it both timely and relatable to the Kenyan public.

Malala’s announcement has opened a new chapter for the play, giving Kenyans the opportunity to engage with its powerful message firsthand.
