Health CS Aden Duale Appoints Dr. Mercy Mwangangi as New CEO of the Social Health Authority (SHA)
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially appointed Dr. Mercy Mwangangi as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Social Health Authority (SHA).
This announcement was made in a statement by the Ministry of Health on Friday, April 11.
Dr. Mwangangi, a seasoned professional in the health sector, has been recognized for her extensive experience spanning over 15 years.
She has held various leadership positions throughout her career, making significant contributions to health policy, financing, and systems reform in Kenya.
“Dr. Mwangangi is an expert in health financing, policy, and universal health coverage (UHC), with a proven track record in institutional reforms and strengthening health systems.
She has demonstrated exceptional leadership in health governance, resource mobilization, and strategic partnerships, driving policy transformation and financial reforms in Kenya’s healthcare sector. Her remarkable background makes her the ideal leader to guide SHA into its next phase,” the Ministry’s statement reads.
Currently, Dr. Mwangangi holds the position of Senior Health System Strengthening Director at AMREF Health Africa. In this role, she leads efforts in health financing and health security investments across the African continent.
The Ministry of Health congratulated Dr. Mwangangi on her new role, expressing confidence in her abilities to lead SHA effectively. “We believe that Dr. Mwangangi has the necessary skills and experience to successfully guide the Social Health Authority and fulfill its mission,” the Ministry stated.
Her appointment follows a rigorous competitive recruitment process, which attracted a total of 92 applicants. After thorough evaluation, 12 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed for the CEO position.
Dr. Mwangangi previously served as the Health Chief Administrative Secretary during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
The Social Health Authority, which replaces the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), is an essential institution focused on advancing universal health coverage (UHC) for all Kenyans, ensuring access to quality healthcare services for everyone across the nation.
