How WhatsApp Status Alerted & Led DCI to Kenyan Woman’s Doorstep

How WhatsApp Status Alerted DCI and Led to Arrest of Two Kenyan Women

On Tuesday, April 15, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two women after a disturbing WhatsApp status update went viral.

One of the women was seen posing with a gun while issuing a bold warning to any man thinking of breaking up with her.

According to a detailed report from the DCI, the operation was carried out by detectives from both the DCI and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau based in Nyando.

Their investigations led them to the home of the woman behind the post, after they received alerts regarding the threatening message shared on her WhatsApp status.

In the now-viral update, the woman boldly declared that any man who planned to dump her would face serious consequences.

While making this statement, she was seen holding a Canik pistol, which raised concern among authorities and members of the public.

The detectives quickly launched an operation and traced the suspect to her residence in Awasi town. She lived in a two-bedroom house that she shared with a friend, who was later also arrested as a co-accused in the case.

During a thorough search of the house, officers discovered the firearm that was featured in the status.

The pistol had been carefully hidden—it was wrapped in clothing, placed in a basin, and concealed under the bed in an attempt to prevent its discovery.

In addition to the illegal firearm, the detectives also found a fake motorcycle number plate in the house, which raised further questions about the women’s activities.

Following these discoveries, the two women were taken into custody and are now undergoing the necessary legal procedures before they are formally charged in court.

Investigators have confirmed that the case is still active, and efforts are ongoing to track down more individuals who might be connected to the weapon or the threatening status.

This arrest comes shortly after a similar case where a man from Kirinyaga County was apprehended for using WhatsApp to send threatening messages to a public official.

On Monday, April 14, the man appeared in court after being accused of threatening Mwea Member of Parliament (MP) Mary Maingi through WhatsApp.

According to the court documents, the man was charged with sending a harmful and threatening message from his phone to the MP’s personal number on March 27, 2025. The court heard that the message was intended to cause fear or harm to the recipient.

After the court proceedings, the man was released on a bond of Ksh100,000 or a cash bail of Ksh30,000. His case is expected to be mentioned again in court on April 28.

These two incidents have raised concern over the misuse of social media platforms like WhatsApp to spread threats and fear.

Authorities have warned the public against such behavior, emphasizing that the law will be enforced strictly to protect lives and ensure public safety.
