President William Ruto has joined other leaders in expressing deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church.

In a message shared on his social media platforms, Ruto described the Pope’s death as a huge loss not only to the Catholic Church but to the entire Christian community and the world at large.

“We stand in solidarity with the Catholic Church and the global community of Christians as we mourn the passing of Pope Francis. His death is a tremendous loss to all Catholic faithful and to Christians everywhere.

Pope Francis will forever be remembered for his life of devotion to God, his leadership in the Church, and his service to humanity,” Ruto wrote.

He further added, “He was a true servant leader who led by example. His humility, strong belief in justice, and tireless efforts to include and uplift the poor and the vulnerable made him a beacon of hope.

His deep moral convictions and ethical stance influenced and touched millions of people across different faiths and cultures.”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also paid tribute to Pope Francis, reflecting on his memorable visit to Kenya in 2015.

Gachagua noted that the Pope’s passing has left a major gap in the spiritual world and especially within the Catholic Church.

He said, “Pope Francis firmly guided the Church in matters of faith and doctrine. He had a great impact not only within the Catholic faith but also on people outside the Church due to his humility and love for all.

His departure is a huge blow to the Church and the wider world. His legacy and teachings will continue to shape Catholicism for years to come.”

“My heartfelt condolences go out to all Catholic believers in Kenya and around the globe. We will always remember him as the Pope who came to our country, prayed with us, and constantly remembered Kenya in his prayers.

May Pope Francis rest in eternal peace, and may the light of God shine upon him forever,” Gachagua added.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, also mourned the Pope, leading Members of Parliament in paying tribute to the late pontiff, who died at the age of 88 at his home in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

In his statement, Wetangula said, “Pope Francis was a true symbol of humility, compassion, and justice. He gave his life to serving both God and humanity with total dedication.

His constant concern for the poor, his desire for global peace, and his message of unity reached millions across the world.

Through his simple but powerful words and his genuine actions, he lived out the teachings of Christ—promoting love, mercy, and forgiveness.”

He continued, “He upheld the value of every human life, no matter their race, background, or social status. His leadership in the Church was both spiritual and human, always centered on compassion.”

According to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Pope Francis passed away peacefully at 7:35 a.m. on Monday, April 21, 2025, at his residence in the Vatican.

A tweet from Vatican News confirmed the sad news: “Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.”

As Kenya and the world come to terms with this immense loss, leaders, faithful followers, and communities continue to honor the life and impact of Pope Francis, a man remembered for leading with humility, loving deeply, and inspiring millions across the globe.
