Sakaja Speaks on the Death of MCA Who Planned to Impeach Him

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has urged the public not to jump to conclusions regarding the sudden death of Kariobangi North Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joel Munuve.

He emphasized that a full investigation is ongoing to establish the actual cause of Munuve’s unexpected passing.

During an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, April 24, Sakaja disclosed that autopsy results were expected to be released later that day.

His comments came as questions and speculations continued to swirl around the mysterious death of the MCA.

“I wish to send my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and constituents of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve, who tragically collapsed and died at his home,” said Sakaja.

“I’ve heard people referring to it as murder, but we must wait for the autopsy results, which are to be made public today.”

Sakaja warned against politicizing the issue, stressing the seriousness of death and the need for sensitivity.

“This is not something to play politics with. Munuve was a dedicated leader who passionately stood for what he believed in.

That’s why we are calling for a thorough investigation to address all the political speculations and find out exactly what happened,” he added.

Joel Munuve passed away on Tuesday, April 22, just three days after he made a public announcement about his plans to table a motion in the County Assembly to impeach Governor Sakaja.

Following his death, various videos emerged online showing the MCA speaking out against the governor and calling for his removal.

In one of the widely shared clips, Munuve boldly declared his intention to start collecting signatures for the impeachment process.

“We must impeach the governor. We are demanding a proper forensic audit to show how county funds are being used.

He claims to collect revenue daily, so how is it possible for one person to own 17 vehicles?” Munuve questioned.

The outspoken MCA was a consistent critic of Governor Sakaja’s leadership. He frequently questioned county development projects and demanded answers on issues of transparency and public accountability.

Just before his death, Munuve had sought an official statement concerning the county’s school feeding initiative, famously known as “Dishi na County.”

Munuve was also among those advocating for the return of Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital to the national government.

He argued that the facility should be managed as a satellite branch of Kenyatta National Hospital to improve service delivery.

In line with this push, he had written formal letters to President William Ruto, the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, and Governor Sakaja, expressing concerns about the hospital’s performance.

According to reports, Munuve collapsed while attending to duties at his ward office in Nairobi. He was rushed to a well-known private hospital located along Kiambu Road, where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

As the news of his sudden death broke, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko joined other leaders in mourning the loss.

He offered his condolences to Munuve’s family and described the MCA’s death as a great loss to Nairobi County.

The circumstances surrounding Munuve’s death remain unclear, and with the autopsy results expected soon, Kenyans continue to seek clarity on whether the tragedy was natural or if there’s more than meets the eye.
